Gold purity is measured in karats (K). 24K is 99.9% pure gold, ideal for investment bars and coins. 22K (91.67% pure) is the standard for Indian jewelry as pure gold is too soft for daily wear. 18K (75% pure) is used in diamond-studded and designer jewelry. Always check the BIS hallmark — mandatory since June 2021 — which certifies purity.
When buying gold jewelry, the final price includes: (1) Gold value based on weight and purity, (2) Making charges (8-25% of gold value depending on design complexity), (3) GST at 3% on the total value including making charges. For investment, gold bars and coins have minimal making charges (1-3%).
Physical gold (bars, coins, jewelry), Gold ETFs traded on NSE/BSE, Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) issued by RBI offering 2.5% annual interest, Gold mutual funds, and Digital Gold available through apps. SGBs are considered the most tax-efficient option with guaranteed returns over the 8-year tenure.
